Mass. AG, 3 theater chains announce access deal

Attorney General Martha Coakley has announced a settlement with the three largest movie theater chains in Massachusetts for improving access for customers with visual and hearing impairments.
The settlement announced Thursday says AMC, Regal Entertainment Group, and National Amusements must ensure that all locations in Massachusetts are equipped with accessible technology, including captioning and description technology.
Captioning technology takes a movie’s sound and converts it to a captioned format. Description technology provides a narration of what is displayed visually on the movie screen during natural pauses in the movie’s soundtrack through headphones worn by the visually impaired.
Coakley made the announcement at the WGBH studios in Boston, a movie theater equipped with the new technology.
